ONEIDA (WLUK) -- The work of Oneida Nation artists shined on the red carpet during the 96th Academy Awards.
Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone made history Sunday as the first Native American to be nominated in the best actress category.
Although Gladstone didn't win an Oscar, she used her platform to spotlight Indigenous designers.
Working with Gucci, her custom midnight-blue velvet gown was designed by Indigenous artist, Joe Big Mountain and his wife, Sunshine.
To hand-quill the gown’s cape, the Big Mountains assembled a team of Indigenous artists on the Oneida reservation to create 216 individual quilled petals.
According to Vogue, the artists tapped for the project include Kendrick Powless-Crouch, Jossalyn Metoxen, Seven Oshkabewisens, Dionne Jacobs, Paige Skenandore, and Aryien Stevens.
Quillwork is a form of textile embellishment traditionally practiced by Indigenous peoples of North America that uses the quills of porcupines.
Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the Martin Scorsese film, also starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, focuses on a series of murders of Osage Nation members after oil was discovered on tribal land.
