LAPWAI, ID- Lapwai's Kase Wynott stands alone as Idaho's all-time leading scorer, a record that hasn't been broken in 31 years. Once the ball went through the basket, it was an electric scene in Lapwai.
"I'm just so thankful for everyone, especially for my boy Chris. He's gotten me so many buckets throughout my whole career, and I'm just thankful," Wynott said.
"It's something that we've thought about for years. He knew about the record, I played with Jared Mercer in college, so I knew him," said father Jeremiah Wynott.
Kase Wynott shared an emotional embrace with his long time coach and father Jeremiah Wynott, along with his head coach Zach Eastman. As the crowd celebrated and witnessed history, Wynott made sure to head over to the stands to hug his mother as well.
"My dad, he's so knowledgeable about basketball, he played a very high level. I wouldn't be here without them. My mother, I love her so much I'm so sad that I'm leaving her next year."
"It's really special. I started coaching him in the second and third grade. I coached him in lots of AAU tournaments, followed him in junior high, and then Zach Eastman let me be on staff last year."
Coach Eastman also took part in the celebration, speaking to the crowd at halftime with the all-time scoring record trophy in hand. He preached that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.
"I was pretty emotional to be honest. Inside, I felt like a proud dad at one moment. Just because I've been with him for so long, we've built such a connection . I wanted this for him as much as anything," Eastman said.
Now that the scoring record is behind him, Wynott and the rest of the team's focus is to win their third straight title, hoping to avenge their 81-79 overtime loss to Lakeside last year.
"I still think about that loss every single day. I think about it every single day, and I'm just trying to get my get back, and I'm coming for sure," Wynott said.
