LEWISTON, ID- For the first time since 2002, the Kendrick girls basketball team are the 1A D2 state champions. They survived a 55-53 overtime thriller against the Dietrich Blue Devils.
"The seniors on our team we've been here since our freshmen year, and we were there our freshmen year and we lost it. We think this is the year to be back in the state championship," said Kendrick senior Ruby Stewart.
Senior Ruby Stewart and the team accomplished just that. The Tigers led 23-14 at halftime.
However, Dietrich started to chip away at the lead. with three seconds left, Kaitlyn Wanamaker made both free throws to force the game into overtime.
Then in overtime, Harley Heimgartner made the go ahead jumper. she ended the night with a team high 15 points.
With three seconds to go, inbound pass goes to sage Hubert, but the shot is no good.
Head coach Ron Ireland got his redemption on the blue devils. in his first season as head coach, the tigers lost to Dietrich in the state title game in 2013.
