LAPWAI, ID- Lapwai's Kase Wynott is on the brink of history. He's now just 74 points away from breaking Idaho's 31 year old all time scoring record.
The original record was set by Jared Mercer of Kamiah in 1993, where he tallied 2,589 career points.
Kase Wynott entered this season with 1,991 career points. He's scored 525 points in 15 games, averaging 35 points per game.
According to Maxpreps, he now sits in the top 10 in the nation in points per game.
His consistency on the court has also led to the team's domination. The Wildcats are 13-2 overall, and 8-0 in conference play.
"We have to win every possession, keep playing harder than other teams. I think you can make up other stuff if you play harder than the other teams," Wynott said.
As Wynott inches up the all time scoring list, he's also recorded five consecutive triple doubles. He credits his performances to quicker ball movement.
"When I have the ball a lot of eyes are on me. The passing attributes that I've added has been big time for my game. It just makes everything easier, everyone's going to have more open shots and close outs being created," Wynott.
More eyes may be on him now, but the Utah State committ has had his sights set on the record even prior to joining the wildcats.
"Me and my dad have talked about his record since before I was in high school. We knew that I had a chance at it, but I just didn't know. Now that I've come up on it, it's a great feeling."
The senior doesn't shy away from the moment or the spotlight. He's put in countless hours to achieve this historic milestone.
"I've put so many hours in this gym, so many on the shooting machine. I shoot 500 shots every single day before school. Just to see the fruits of my labor, it feels great."
The Wildcats have six games left of the regular season. Their next home game is on Thursday, January 25th against the Clearwater Valley Rams.
