ASOTIN, WA- Cameron Clovis is one of three seniors on the Asotin wrestling team. He was honored during their senior night against the Lewiston Bengals.
He also helped return the wrestling program to Asotin high school.
"We get good crowds, especially for wrestling. Even though it's a new sport, we got a giant crowd out here, and it felt awesome to have everyone cheering for us. To be honored before a match made it even more special," Clovis said.
After a hiatus of over 40 years, the Asotin wrestling program is back. For Clovis and his family, it's familiar territory.
"The last team that we had was in 1979, and my dads friends with a lot of the guys on the old team. They're like 10 years older than him, and they're in their sixties so its weird to see it come full circle," Clovis said.
The first-year wrestler fell in love with the sport less than a year ago, having his first practice and match just two months ago.
"The intensity is huge, the mental toughness. It just pushes you further than than you ever thought you can be pushed. I'm in the best shape of my life, and I like the constant challenges."
Now in his senior year, Clovis is a multi-sport athlete, playing football and baseball. However, the positive team dynamic has put wrestling at the top of his list.
"A lot of them are new, just like me. We're kind of learning it all together. And it's been a super fun experience. We have some of the best coaches I can ever ask for, and we're all just one big family," Clovis said.
Clovis will continue to improve as the season goes on, hoping to eventually extend his wrestling season.
"I just try and be like a sponge everyday. I ask as many questions as possible. It'd be cool to go to state. I think it's three guys from our district in my weight class go to state."
