PULLMAN, WA- PULLMAN, WA- The Washington State Cougars continue to make history. They handed the University of Arizona their first home loss of the season.
Their 77-74 victory moved them to first place in the Pac-12 Conference.
With just under 30 seconds to go, Jaylen Wells made the shot of his life that will go down as one of the greatest in cougar history.
"I caught the ball, I shot it, and I didn't even see the rim. I was laying on the ground, he was sitting me, I looked up and someone in the crowd said yeah dawg!” Wells said.
“I made it, and when I got up my teammates told me that I made it. I did not know that I made it."
The Wildcats had no answer for wells. The junior racked up a career-high 27 points, with six three pointers. Rueben Chinyelu scored 12 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double double.
"This is big. We stayed poised, kept fighting back, I think it's a big win for us because they thought we were the underdog. People are saying we have to play Arizona, but no, they have to play us,” Wells said.
The Cougs swept the Arizona Wildcats for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Their eight game conference winning streak puts them to 21 wins on the year.
It's also the first time in program history beating two top 10 opponents.
"I told the guys before the season that this is a tournament team. if we don't get there, it's on me. I thought our talent was good enough,” said head coach Kyle Smith.
'`Playing for the first place late in the season is just a tremendous feat in itself for the program and now has a chance to keep it moving.'
Head Coach Kyle Smith was also added to the Naismith Coach of the Year late season watch list.
